ROLE

Level Designer for Axiosys

DESCRIPTION

I am a Level Designer for Mawforged, a first-person fantasy hardcore-survival game, set in the sprawling underworld of the Maw; a realm of perpetual twilight, ancient secrets, and relentless conflict.
The game is still in (pre)production, so while I am unable to talk about the work I am producing, I can share what my role is and general areas of the open world I am creating that have already been released.

My Responsibilities as a Level Designer

  • Designing the Tutorial  :

  • Map Landscape Design :

  • POI & Key Area Design :

  • Additional                           :
I was tasked with creating a tutorial for the game's start, introducing players to key concepts in a natural way. I designed a winding cave system as a safe 'corridor' level for players to explore, learn new mechanics, and get a feel for the game before venturing out.

I mapped out the entire game area, which spans approximately 2000x2000 meters and takes around 20 minutes to walk across. I employed my landscape knowledge to determine height limits and river depths while considering the land's slope and how it impacted the plateau. This experience taught me about the technical aspects of landscape creation within a limited engine, and I used Unreal Engine's tools to terraform a realistic map for the level.

I incorporated points of interest (POIs) into the landscape, ensuring they fit their surroundings and were unique, interesting, and thematically consistent. These designs were tailored around potential quests and gameplay events to serve their intended purpose.

In addition to level design, I work closely with all team disciplines. As a key playtester, I provide early feedback on design and technical elements, and I enjoy collaborating with colleagues to share my insights on their work.

I have learn a great deal from this project. My technical and design knowledge has increased massively while working in a team with other designers to collaborate with. The professional setting has allowed me to experience how a development team operates and learn new skills within a practical environment where I am encouraged to explore my designs fully and produce the best work I can. I truly enjoy my work on Mawforged and all it has taught me so far!
